The Perfect Matcha In Glasgow

Matcha has made a vibrant entrance into cafes, kitchens and Instagram feeds around the world. Its bright green has become associated with health, wellness, and sophistication leading to matcha lattes and matcha-infused desserts appearing everywhere. But what exactly is matcha, and why has it become such a trend?

Matcha is a type of green tea made by grinding specially grown tea leaves into a fine powder. Unlike traditional green tea, matcha involves consuming the entire tea leaf leading to a more concentrated mix of nutrients and antioxidants. But why has it become so popular?

Wellness Appeal

The wellness movement in today's society is definitely to credit as a driving force for matcha's rise in popularity. Consumers are more health-conscious than ever so matcha’s reputation as a 'superfood' has made it a trendy choice for those looking for healthier drink options. Matcha drinks are popular as vegan alternatives as they are more often made with oat, almond and other plant milk. Not only does matcha allow those with dietary requirements to have an alternative it is also packed with antioxidants that are known to reduce inflammation, protect against heart disease and even support cancer prevention. due to its genuine health benefits consumers are choosing it over coffee and other specialty drinks.

Aesthetic

In the social media world aesthetic matters. Due to Matcha’s bold green colour it has become a favourite among influencers and food bloggers who are looking for the most visually appealing content. These pictures vary from matcha lates in an ombre cup to bright deserts. Due to matcha's social media popularity its allowed independent coffee shops to become successful over night. An example of this is the rise of Blank Street. Blank Street has tapped into seasonal and trending items such as plant-based milk and matcha lattes allowing their brand to appeal to a younger more health-conscious demographic, they also work with influencers that follow the aesthetic that draws in those looking to follow.

In this series of blogs I will be testing matcha's around Glasgow and rating them based on different factors such as price, taste, aesthetic and atmosphere in order to find the perfect match-a <3

Black Sheep coffee - Sauchiehall Street Glasgow

Today's matcha spot was Black sheep! with 3 coffee shops around Glasgow city centre and a fourth one  on the way - conveniently located at the bottom of strathclyde hill its the perfect spot to grab a coffee.  On Mondays black sheep offer £2 student coffee, this is a great deal to start off the week. They have recently launched their seasonal menu, the matcha I got today was a ginger bread flavour. I was not sure how this flavour combination would work but it was okay - it was a very sickly taste and tasted like Christmas candles but I still enjoyed it. Black sheep use ceremonial grade Japanese matcha - meaning the leafs are higher quality. This makes for a great strong tasting matcha their other flavours consist of strawberry blueberry and vanilla, I have had these multiple times and really enjoy the blueberry one. I ordered the matcha via the mobile app, this allowed me to select a time for collection and apply the discount codes. black sheep also offer a loyalty scheme this...

Strathclyde cafe - university of strathclyde

For today's blog we are switching things up! As a strathclyde student i can't not mention a strathclyde cafe. Unfortunately nowhere on campus sells matcha - a great idea that should be introduced, however iced coffee is the next best thing. I am very aware the unique taste of matcha is not for everyone so I thought taking a different approach this week and choose something that would appeal to those that stick to a trusty iced coffee.  The cafe is in the learning and teaching building, around the corner from my marketing lecture. It's always busy and offers a great selection of fresh breakfast and lunch options. There is no seating within the cafe however these are many communal study spaces dotted near by to take your food and drink to allowing students to multitask in peace.  The convenience of the cafe is the best part, the service is fast and the staff are very friendly, this allows you to quickly grab a coffee before class. The cafe also offers a loyalty card that c...

Oaka Supercity - George Street Glasgow

Oaka supercity is located on George street in Glasgow city centre (the bottom of the strath hill), it is an asian grocery store that supplies a range of foods from fresh to frozen.  I found out about this matcha spot on google maps when searching for matcha nearby. With minimal reviews I was sceptical however due to its convenience I thought I would give it a go.  when entering the shop the smell of fresh noodles and asian spices welcome you, the menu was clear and showed the price of all the food and drinks they offer.  I opted for an "Ube Matcha".  I wasn't sure what flavouring this was, I discovered that Ube is a brightly coloured yam that comes from the Philippines, it tastes light and vanilla like. The combination of the ube and the matcha was amazing, it allowed the matcha to be naturally sweetened and there was no need for additives such as vanilla syrup, the colour contrast of the green and the vibrant purple also created a aesthetically pleasing drink...
